Sister about to spill my brother’s secrets

July 27, 2023

Dear Pastor,

I am 18 years old and I am living with my parents. I have two siblings, one is 20 and the other is 14. My brother, who is 20, has a girlfriend. He has his own room, but my sister and I share a room.

My brother's girlfriend and I are the same age. He bribes me sometimes, and I accept it because I need the money from him. Sometimes when my parents are asleep, my brother brings his girlfriend to the house, and my parents are not even aware of it. They spend their time together and then leave.

My sister and my brother had a fuss and she told my brother that she would tell our parents about the girl he has been taking to the house. He offered her more money to keep quiet. I have been begging my sister not to tell my parents because that will also hurt me. I am a Christian and I shouldn't be encouraging my brother to take a girl to their house and spend time with her there.

I know what I have been doing is wrong. My brother got his partner draw worth $20,000. He gave my sister $5,000 and gave me $5,000, but my sister still insists that she will tell on him. What should I do?

G.M.

Dear G.M.,

Tell your brother to stop bringing his girlfriend to the house. If she is going to come there, it should be just for a visit when everybody is away, but he should not use his parents' house as a motel. You should also tell your sister that it is wrong to take his money and then inform his parents about what he is doing. Both of you should stop taking his money; and let him know that you cannot keep secrets for him any more.
