Protest rocks St Catherine after man found dead after allegedly being taken by cops

Residents of Harkers Hall, St Catherine, have taken to the streets in protest after the body of a Spanish Town Hospital employee was discovered with what appeared to be multiple gunshot wounds.

The deceased has been identified as Lenroy York, whose death has triggered anger and roadblocks across sections of the community.

The protest reportedly began after York's body was discovered inside an abandoned building following a community dance on Sunday night.

According to reports, York was at the event when he was searched and removed by police. His body was subsequently discovered, prompting residents to demand answers surrounding his death.

Angry residents later blocked the main roadway using old refrigerators and other items, bringing traffic to a standstill at several points.

The disruption has affected people travelling through Bog Walk, Glengoffe, Above Rocks and surrounding communities, leaving motorists and commuters unable to move freely and disrupting normal business activities.

The circumstances surrounding York's death remain under investigation.

Head of the St Catherine North Police Division, Senior Superintendent Hopton Nicholson, said the police will be visiting the community.

Meanwhile, the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has launched a probe into the circumstances surrounding the death.

The protest has added further tension to the community as residents await answers about what happened to York and why he was found dead after being removed from the dance.
