Paul powers Kingsmen to easy win
In a spectacular display of power hitting and clinical bowling, the Jamaica Kingsmen secured a resounding 51-run victory over the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots in the 10th match of the Caribbean Premier League at Sabina Park last night.
The Kingsmen posted an imposing 181-6 from their 20 overs before bowling out the Patriots for just 130 in 18 overs, sealing their second consecutive win of the season.
The Patriots won the toss and elected to field first, a decision that initially paid dividends as Saurabh Netravalkar struck twice in the opening over.
Kirk McKenzie fell for a golden duck, before Keacy Carty followed suit without scoring, leaving the Kingsmen reeling at none for two inside the first over.
However, Reeza Hendricks 19 off 14 and Usman Khan 13 off 17 steadied the ship before the real fireworks began.
Captain Rovman Powell anchored the innings with a magnificent 49 off 39 balls, while Keemo Paul produced his career-best CPL score with a breathtaking 65 off just 36 deliveries.
The pair combined for a crucial fifth-wicket partnership that transformed the innings.
Paul, who surpassed 800 career runs in the tournament, was in devastating form, striking five fours and five sixes in his blistering knock.
Andre Russell provided the late surge with an unbeaten 14 off 7 balls, including two massive sixes, as the Kingsmen plundered 67 runs from their final five overs at a staggering 13.40 runs per over.
Netravalkar finished with 2-43 from his four overs, while Wanindu Hasaranga and Obed McCoy claimed two and one wicket, respectively.
Chasing a daunting target of 182, the Patriots’ innings never gained momentum.
Andre Fletcher fell early to Hassan Khan for 7, and Johnson Charles 11 and Kyle Mayers 8 followed in quick succession as the visitors slumped to 31-3.
Kevin Wickham top-scored with 37 off 28 balls, but the Patriots’ innings unravelled spectacularly with a bizarre mix-up that saw Dasun Shanaka run out after colliding with Wickham mid-pitch.
The Sri Lankan managed just two runs before the confusion resulted in his dismissal.
Navin Bidaisee retired out on 19 as the Patriots struggled to build partnerships.
Skipper Jason Holder could only manage one before falling to Russell, while Hasaranga’s late cameo of 11 wasn’t enough to save his side.
Keemo Paul was the pick of the Kingsmen bowlers, claiming three wickets for 30 runs from his four overs, while Andre Russell returned figures of 2-19 to continue his remarkable tournament form.
The all-rounder now leads the CPL wicket charts with nine scalps and sits just two wickets shy of 110 career wickets in the competition.
The win propels the Kingsmen to second place in the standings with four points, level with leaders Barbados Tridents who maintain a superior net run rate.
The Kingsmen have now completed their home leg with back-to-back victories, setting up an exciting remainder of their CPL campaign.
