Jamaica Kingsmen rise McKenzie masterclass sets up local franchise’s first victory

The sleeping giant finally awakened. In a blistering display of power-hitting under Sabina Park’s lights, Jamaica Kingsmen registered their first victory of the 2026 Caribbean Premier League (CPL), dismantling defending champions Trinbago Knight Riders by five wickets.

If the Kingsmen’s season was looking for a spark, they found it in the form of young Jamaican Kirk McKenzie’s batting on Saturday night.

Promoted to the top of the order just hours before the toss, McKenzie delivered a career-defining innings, smashing a breathtaking 69 off just 25 balls.

His knock was a violent masterpiece, featuring six fours and six sixes, as he single-handedly turned what looked like a steep chase into a procession.

AGGRESSION

Chasing 183 for victory, the Kingsmen lost none of their early aggression.

McKenzie and Reeza Hendricks (37 off 29) put on a rapid 93-run opening stand that took the wind out of the Knight Riders’ sails.

And though the chase stuttered slightly with the dismissals of Shayan Jahangir and Keacy Carty, skipper Rovman Powell (29 off 22) and the ever-reliable Andre Russell (27 off 15) ensured there were no late jitters, guiding the hosts home with overs to spare.

Victory was historic for the franchise, marking the highest successful run-chase in CPL history at Sabina Park, surpassing the Tallawahs’ 176-run effort in 2018.

Earlier in the evening, the Knight Riders appeared to have posted a winning total, thanks to a 67-run partnership between captain Nicholas Pooran and Kieron Pollard. Both men scored 44, with Pollard’s innings being the more destructive, a 22-ball knock laced with four fours and three sixes.

Pooran anchored the innings with a steady 32-ball effort, while Sunil Narine’s late cameo of 19 not out off eight gave Trinbago a boost.

INSUFFICIENT

However, 182-6 proved insufficient on a good Sabina Park surface.

Russell with 2-34 and Hunain Shah, 2-31, were the pick of the Jamaica bowlers, keeping the Knight Riders in check during the middle overs.

For the Kingsmen, this win is about more than just the two points.

It is validation. After losing three close games to start the season, the dressing room was desperate for a breakthrough.

Player of the Match McKenzie summed up their mentality in the post-match presentation.

“We just said, ‘be fearless, backs against the wall, nothing to lose’. We wanted to give the home team and the home crowd something to smile for.”

McKenzie has now surpassed 200 runs. He is the ninth player to register a half-century in the 2026 edition.

Conversely, the Knight Riders will be frustrated. Usman Tariq’s exceptional spell of 3-21 was a rare highlight in an otherwise flat bowling performance.

They suffered their first defeat after opening with a win. And while their playoff ambitions remain intact, the loss serves as a reminder that no total is safe in this format.

The Kingsmen are not done with Sabina Park just yet. They will conclude their home campaign on Tuesday evening when they face the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots at 7 p.m.
