Purosangue nabs ultimate spoiler Novio
NOVIO, one of three suggested bankers in last Friday’s Reggae 6 preview, played consecutive but contrasting spoiler roles, losing the second event as a 3-5 favourite to PUROSANGUE after upsetting another stablemate, PEPPER STEPPER, two weeks prior.
PUROSANGUE, a 5-1 shot, ran down NOVIO, who gave up a clear lead a furlong out, his stamina limitations exposed at seven and a half furlongs, exposing the three-year-old American colt as a run-on sprinter.
The longest shot on the Reggae 6, PUROSANGUE was STAR Sports’ Reggae 6 Snaps’ third choice, ‘Strong finisher; Galloped 6f in 1:13.0 out chute last Saturday’.
PUROSANGUE’s upset pushed the payout to $39,588, sending a single-winner bonus of $4.27m to this Saturday’s meet.
DREAMER opened the Reggae 6 as an even-money favourite, nailing 3-1 chance STARLIGHT PRINCESS with Calvin Bailey, the nine-pound claimer, who lost the Jamaica Derby by a nose aboard 82-1 longshot MAVERICK, caught and beaten by stablemate LONDON SPIRIT, both sporting the colours of champion owner Carlton Watson.
Though NATIVE ALLIANCE won the third at odds of 3-1, STAR Sports’ Reggae 6 Snaps had the Paul Swaby-trained runner as second-choice to NEVER, pointing out, ‘Easy 7-length winner, May 16. Tongue-tie refitted’.
PASSWORD, the second proposed banker, won the fourth easily at odds of 2-5 but ABSOLUTE BLUE’s suspect legs gave out in the fifth, leaving STAR Sports Reggae 6 Snap’s third choice, SIR GANGA JAMUNA, to get home at odds of 3-1.
FORMALIST, running true to his ‘Outsped by Danka and Ascend, 3rd out straight. Flew 1:05.3 at exercise. Can make all’, did likewise to close the Reggae 6 as a 4-5 favourite, closing a two-timer for the pair of Robert Halledeen and Jason DaCosta, who added a third winner with FIDELITY, who survived a stewards’ enquiry and jockey’s objection in the seventh at five furlongs straight, handing Tevin Foster a two-timer.
Foster, who had booted home PASSWORD, moved to 62 winners atop the jockeys’ standings three clear of two-time defending champion, Raddesh Roman, who has been out injured, ironically handing out the trophy named for him on Jockeys’ Guild Day to rival Foster, who won aboard FIDELITY.
Jaheim Anderson, a seven-pound claimer, also won two races, guiding home NATIVE ALLIANCE and LINGUIST at five furlongs straight in the overnight-allowance nightpan for Anthony Nunes.
