Meadforest Football Club tasted their first national-level football experience on Saturday with a 3-0 victory over Portlanders, and president Dalglish Henry and the players are savouring the historic occasion.

It was the first round of the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) National Tier II competition, and Meadforest travelled to Lynch Park in Portland to get two goals from Rodari Edwards and another from Chavaughn Warren to turn back their hosts for a successful start to life in the second tier competition.

"It was a dream come true and a combination of hard work over the last 20 years, and what is most significant is that 95 per cent of the team played youth football for the club.

"So to have reached a stage like this is a milestone for the club, and our community is fully buoyed by it," Dalglish commented.

Meadforest, from the Corporate Area, represent the surrounding communities of Red Hills Road, Jackson Town and Ackee Walk, and for many of the players, who hail from these areas, the trip was like a holiday.

"Most had not been to that section of the island," Dalglish noted. "So words could not explain the feelings of the players and community, and it showed on the field as they were excited and enthused to be there, and it was just a lovely occasion," he continued.

Dalglish declared that their ambition is to advance to the top-flight Jamaica Premier League (JPL) and the positive start has consolidated the belief that they can compete at the highest level.

SENDS A MESSAGE

"Starting well always create a challenge because you have to try and maintain it, but at the same time, it sends a message to the other teams that we are here to play football.

"Our result also shows teams in our (KSAFA) league that doubted themselves, that they can compete at this level.

"We have one of the top local coaches in Mr (Calvert) Fitzgerald, and he aims to qualify the team (for JPL).

"The community is buoyed, and the players are buoyed. We are looking forward to playing Wadadah this weekend and see where we go from there."
