Dancehall star KipRich is mourning the sudden death of his father, Magnus Lloyd Plunkett, who passed away last Friday at age 72.

The entertainer, whose given name is Marlon Plunkett, said his father had been experiencing kidney problems and was scheduled to undergo follow-up tests. However, the family was plunged into grief after one of KipRich’s brothers found Plunkett unresponsive at home.

“My brother is down in Jamaica, and he was cooking some soup for him. When he went to check on him, he was unresponsive,” KipRich recalled. Plunkett was rushed to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Affectionately known as ‘Mr Chin’, Plunkett was remembered by his famous son as an astute businessman, fearless transport operator and generous mentor who possessed a remarkable ability to turn modest ventures into major successes.

“He was able to turn any small business into something major. His mentorship was unmatched,” KipRich said. Plunkett was also a devoted reggae fan who loved to dance, often displaying what his son described as a signature “rude boy” swagger. He is survived by his widow, Carrol Plunkett, whom he married in 1994; four sons – KipRich, Ricardo, Sprite Rafer and Jamal Plunkett – and his daughter, Kayla Plunkett.

The devastating loss comes during an already painful year for KipRich, who also mourned the death of the newborn child he shared with his fiancée earlier this year.

“This ah one of the roughest years. Mi father ... only Almighty knows,” the deejay said.

As the family processes the tragedy, plans are being made for candlelight ceremonies in three communities that reflect Plunkett’s far-reaching influence.

“We’re planning the candlelight ceremonies now, and ah that we ah medz now,” KipRich said. “One ah keep ah Waterhouse, one ah Linstead and one ah Spanish Town. Ah so the ting come down with my father – his wings spread all ’bout.”
