Mount Pleasant secure crucial first-leg victory in Caribbean Cup final
Mount Pleasant took a vital 1-0 lead over Universidad O&M in the first leg of their Concacaf Caribbean Cup final, at the Estadio Cibao FC in Santiago de los Caballeros, Dominican Republic last night. Kimoni Bailey scored the all-important goal eight minutes into the first half, to take his team a step closer to the coveted regional championship.
Mount Pleasant started the better of the two teams and got the go-ahead goal through Bailey, who steered home Gadail Irving's corner from 12 yards with his trusted left boot.
Mount Pleasant continued to have the better of play after taking the lead but failed to make use of their superiority.
Universidad O&M came into their own after the 20th-minute mark and gave the Jamaicans a few scares but the Mount Pleasant defence kept out their opponents.
However, the Theodore Whitmore-coached team regained control towards the latter stages, but had no clear cut chance to add to their advantage.
Mount Pleasant continued to control the match after the interval, and limited their opponent's opportunities on goal.
The St Ann-based team also had a couple of good chances to add to their lead. Raheem Edwards thought he had added a second but his goal was called back for a hand ball.
Mount Pleasant, however, saw out the game without much difficulty. Overall, they were behind in possession (47 per cent to 53) but had three big chances throughout the match with six shots on target and six corners to Universidad's two.
The second leg of the final will be played at the National Stadium next Tuesday.
