JWPL, Tier II top two teams to get money
Compensations are coming for the finalists in the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) National Tier II competition and the Jamaica Women's Premier League (JWPL), according to JFF president Michael Ricketts.
The JWPL ended in June, while the Tier II competition ended on the weekend. Ricketts said that despite prize monies not being determined before the start, they have heard the teams' cries and will ensure the top teams are rewarded for their effort.
"We have to look at a compensation package for the teams that participated in the just concluded Tier II competition and the ladies. We will be computing our figures and will advise the teams that made it to the final that we will make some funds available.
"As soon as we can work out the logistics and the details, we will formally advise the clubs of what amount of money is available," Ricketts said virtually at a sponsorship handover at the JFF secretariat yesterday.
The teams have expressed the financial difficulties they were facing during the competitions, and Ricketts admits he is aware of their burdening constraints and a need for the top teams to earn at the end of their long season.
"It is something that we are aware of. We understand the troubles of the teams. We know how expensive travelling is, feeding programmes and the purchase of equipment, so the JFF is ensuring that reimbursable compensation is part of the deal.
"We might not be able to give all that was spent, but we want to ensure we contribute to the process of participating in the Tier II and Premier League for the ladies. We will work on the details and make a formal announcement soon," Ricketts said.
JFF general secretary Dennis Chung added the announcement will be made in the next two weeks.
"There was no prize money announced, but we looked at it and decided and determined that we need to ensure some money goes to the first-place and second-place teams in both the Tier II and the Women's Premier League.
"It is rough out there, and in most cases, they (clubs) have it tougher than we (JFF) have, so we are going to find some funding, and we are going to allocate some prize money in another two weeks," Chung said.
He added that they also intend to decide on prize monies for these competitions before the start of next season.
"We are going to ensure there is prize money for everything. The objective was to get the competitions going because we were coming from COVID. Now we got them going, we have been having discussions, and we will schedule that to happen promptly to ensure prize money is available for everybody," Chung stated.
Treasure Beach defeated Lime Hall in the Tier II final on Sunday to take the title, while Frazsiers Whip defeated Cavalier to take the JWPL and knockout crowns.
