Wife inspires husband to complete master’s degree
After months of juggling his studies, work and the demands of completing his master’s programme, Terrain Wright was ready to give up.
The 27-year-old corporate communications manager told his wife, Angelique, that he was going to quit, but she was having none of it.
“She pushed me to continue and told me ‘You come this far. It would be foolish to throw in the towel now, that’s a no’,” Terrain recalled. “She reminded me that I just need to have faith.”
Those words were enough to push him through the final stretch, and now the couple are celebrating their respective master’s degrees. Angelique, 28, completed her Master of Business Administration with the University of the People in 2025, while Terrain completed his Master of International Relations in 2025 from Liverpool John Moores University in the UK, and was officially awarded his degree this year.
“Studying with a UK university while living in Jamaica meant adjusting to different teaching styles, time-zone differences and challenges getting feedback. I tried to work around those but it was the thesis that nearly broke me,” said Terrain. “I literally told her that I was going to drop out of the programme because I wasn’t sure what I was doing. It started to affect my mental health. It was getting really bad for me because I was stressing out over it.”
But Angelique, who had already completed her own master’s programme, reminded him how far he had come. Her encouragement, coupled with his faith, eventually changed his outlook. So he brought his cares to God, praying for strength to clear the final hurdle.
“When I got my degree, I was so overjoyed. It was just a proof that God really wanted this for my life,” said Terrain.
For Angelique, seeing her husband cross the finish line was just as rewarding as earning her own degree. She even planned the victory celebration from last year.
“I told him last year that, hey, as soon as we get the degree, I believe we can do a photo shoot to celebrate together,” she said.
The couple met at a previous workplace, where Terrain initially pursued Angelique. She was already pursuing her master’s at the time, having started in January 2023. They became close friends before entering an exclusive relationship in October of that year. Terrain proposed in May 2024, and they married that November.
“It was not a plan for both of us to obtain international master’s programmes,” Angelique said. “I just wanted to further my education.” Despite both pursuing demanding programmes, the couple said supporting each other was never a challenge.
“If she has assignments and she needs to study and stuff like that, I will pick up the slack in terms of certain household duties,” Terrain explained. “So we kind of give each other space to lock in when it comes to schoolwork.”
And when the books and assignments were put aside, they made time to simply enjoy being married.
“So we watch a movie, we do stuff that can clear the mind from the work,” Terrain told THE STAR. “We see this as a partnership and we work towards accomplishing what we are working on as partners.”
Now that they have both achieved their goal, the Wrights are already looking ahead.
“Even though I have my master’s, to me the journey doesn’t stop here. I can still go further,” Angelique said, hinting at the possibility of pursuing a PhD. Terrain, who grew up in Trench Town, sees education as much more than a personal accomplishment.
“I take education very seriously because I know for a fact that it is the way out of poverty – the way that you can not only help yourself but help others and be a real blessing,” he said.
“To know my background and where I’m coming from, to now have two degrees to my name, is a really fulfilling accomplishment and milestone. My parents don’t have that and I was able to do it,” he said.
For other couples pursuing big goals together, Terrain’s advice is rooted in the same faith that helped him finish his own journey.
“A lot of couples tend to be at each other’s necks when they have hard times. Rather than attacking the problem as a team, they think they attack each other and they tend to forget the love. Put God in the mix and keep Him there, I have a master’s degree but the Master did it.”
