Cardi B expected to be major draw for BZR Weekend
Since the recent announcement that Grammy Award-winning rapper Cardi B is set to appear at the BZR Weekend event over the National Heroes Weekend in October, the buzz is on as Jamaicans are once again gearing up for another international superstar to hit our shores.
Cardi B was a very intentional choice, BZR Weekend Public Relations Manager Kaylia Williams told THE WEEKEND STAR, as the organisers wanted an artiste who could deliver more than just a big name.
“We wanted someone who could create a true cultural moment, and she has that ability,” she said.
Williams said Cardi B’s connection to Caribbean culture, and Jamaica was another factor, pointing to the rapper’s embrace of dancehall and Jamaican culture, as well as her bringing Vybz Kartel onto the Florida stop of her Little Miss Drama Tour in Miami earlier this year.
“So, for us, bringing Cardi B to Jamaica feels like a natural crossover rather than simply importing an international superstar,” she added.
Williams also said Jamaicans love performers who give 100 per cent, and that is definitely Cardi B.
“She is unapologetic, unpredictable, charismatic and theatrical, and her 2026 tour demonstrated exactly that, with major arena shows and a production built around big moments and high-energy performance.”
Williams is anticipating that Cardi B will bring “Drama, energy, attitude, hits and a whole lot of vibes” to the Jamaican audience, but said her impact could extend beyond the performance itself.
“This is being positioned as her first Caribbean stadium-headlining concert, which makes the moment bigger than just one show. It puts Jamaica at the centre of the international entertainment conversation and gives visitors another reason to come experience our music, culture, food, fashion and nightlife,” Williams said.
She said the event is therefore about more than putting a superstar on stage.
“It is about creating a moment that feels uniquely Jamaican, but resonates globally.”
For State Minister in the Ministry of Industry, Investment and Commerce Delano Seiveright, the international rap star’s appearance is expected to have an impact beyond the concert itself.
“She is one of the biggest and most recognisable personalities in global music currently. Jamaica hosting her first-ever Caribbean stadium-headlining performance at the National Stadium on October 18 sends a powerful signal about our ability to attract major international entertainment brands,” Seiveright told THE WEEKEND STAR.
He further pointed to Cardi B’s approximately 161 million Instagram followers and tens of millions more across TikTok, YouTube, Facebook and other platforms. Her recently completed tour also sold approximately 453,000 tickets across many North American shows and grossed millions.
“So, is she as big a draw as Chris Brown or Burna Boy? Absolutely. Though they are different artistes with different audiences, Cardi B is unquestionably in that global superstar tier,” he added.
The potential impact extends to air flights, hotel and Airbnb bookings, restaurants, transportation, entertainment, retail and MSMEs generally.
“From the Industry, Investment and Commerce portfolio, that linkage is critical. Entertainment tourism drives economic activity across multiple sectors, creates opportunities for Jamaican businesses and workers, and strengthens Brand Jamaica internationally,” said Seiveright.
