Don’t want another baby right now

October 02, 2025

Dear Pastor,

I am 22 and I have a young baby. My husband and I have resumed having sex. I am scared that he will get me pregnant, so I bought some condoms.

But my husband told me that he heard that a new mother will not get pregnant as long as she is nursing her baby. My mother told me that my husband is talking foolishness, so I should protect myself from pregnancy. One night, I had to force my husband to put on the condom. He was clearly upset. So I decided to write to you and ask you what is the truth. Can a woman get pregnant while she is nursing her baby? Thanks for reading and answering my letter.

K.E.

Dear K.E.,

I am sure you are aware that I am not a medical doctor. But it does not take a medical doctor to answer your question.

The answer is a straightforward yes. A woman who is nursing her baby can get pregnant and that can happen even before the mother is seeing her first period after giving birth. Your husband and you shouldn't fight over this matter. Both of you should go and see your doctor. I would hate to think that your husband is very eager to see you become pregnant again and that is the reason why he is refusing to use the condom.

I have two friends who resumed having sex very soon after the mother gave birth. In a matter of few weeks, the woman became pregnant. They could not believe it. So don't listen to the nonsense your husband is talking. On the other hand, you should protect yourself. Go to your doctor and tell him that you would like to go on the Pill. That way, you wouldn't be having an argument with your husband. I am assuming that your husband wants a break from using the condom. He does not carry a pregnancy for nine months, but you do, so protect yourself.
