Seville poised for Diamond League title

Oblique Seville will carry Jamaica’s hopes into what promises to be a fiercely contested men’s 100 metres at the Wanda Diamond League Final in Brussels, Belgium, on Friday.

Seville enters the championship race in a confident mood after producing one of the most impressive performances of his season at the Silesia Diamond League last Sunday, storming to victory in 9.83 seconds.

The Jamaican, who is the reigning World champion, defeated American Kenny Bednarek, who ran 9.87, with another American, Christian Coleman, third in 9.93. The race was historic, with all nine finalists running under 10 seconds.

That victory strengthened Seville’s position at the top of the Diamond League standings. He has accumulated 23 points, the same total as South Africa’s Gift Leotlela, but Seville holds the No. 1 position.

Seville’s current form makes him one of the leading contenders for the Diamond Trophy, but he will face a powerful field featuring several of the world’s fastest sprinters.

Bednarek will be seeking revenge after his second-place finish in Silesia, while South Africa’s Leotlela, who also has 23 points, will be another serious threat.

Emmanuel Essme of Cameroon, Trayvon Bromell of the United States and South Africa’s Akani Simbine are also among the leading names expected to challenge for the title.

Seville, however, has already shown that he can handle the pressure of the biggest races. His breakthrough came last year when he captured the World 100m title, and he has continued to establish himself among the leading sprinters in the world.

There is also a significant Jamaican connection to the history of the Brussels final. Ackeem Blake won the Diamond League 100m Final in Brussels in 2024, defeating Coleman in a thrilling finish.

Seville will now attempt to become the second Jamaican in three years to lift the Diamond Trophy in the event.

With the World champion coming off a 9.83 clocking, Jamaica will be hoping that Seville can produce another big performance when it matters most.

The men’s 100m final is scheduled for this Friday, and will be one of the headline events of the two-day Diamond League Final.
