Calabar High edged Wolmer's Boys 2-1 in an intense Zone E playoff round encounter yesterday at The Mico University College field in the ISSA/WATA Manning Cup competition.

Goals from Franchesco Reid in the 30th minute and Dujaughn Martin in 45th minute handed Calabar all three points.

Meanwhile, Alex Wright's goal in the 55th minute proved a consolation effort for the home team.

Jeremy Miller, head coach of Calabar, said the win had essentially ensured their passage to the round of 16.

"It's a hard-fought game and I'm really proud of the boys because they went out there and they really fought," Miller said.

"This win kind of guaranteed us going through to the next round because it puts space between us and Wolmer's and now we have Mona High in our sights."

Calabar sit second with 21 points, trailing leaders Mona High who hold a perfect round with 24. Wolmer's are third with 15, while Ascot sit fourth, and out of an automatic qualifying spot, with 10.

Reid opened the scoring for Calabar in the 30th minute straight from the corner kick, as a goalkeeping error form Joel Williams saw the ball looping into the back of the net.

Calabar doubled their lead by virtue of another Williams' error, as he failed to collect the ball from another corner delivery, handing Martin an empty net to finish into.

Wolmer's fought hard in the second half in search of an equaliser and Wright pulled one back with a volley that caught the goalkeeper unaware.

They failed, however, to find a second goal as Calabar's defence stood strong in face of their constant pressure.

Mona made it eight wins in a row when they thumped Ascot 9-0 to extend their perfect record.

Defending champions Kingston College also extended their perfect record as they turned back Haile Selassie 4-0.

St Catherine, the other perfect team in the Manning Cup, defeated Norman Manley 2-0 in their encounter.

In Zone B action, Jamaica College banished doubts of their pedigree as they hammered Vauxhall high 4-0, while STATHS downed Camperdown 4-0.
