Alleged burglar caught stealing crates from garage while family was home

A suspected burglar allegedly thought he had hit the jackpot when he quietly began hauling crates and bottles from a Westmoreland garage—unaware the homeowner was just a few steps away.

The alleged theft quickly spiralled into a violent confrontation after the homeowner reportedly caught the intruder in the act, leading to a knife-wielding struggle that left both men injured.

Charged is 40-year-old Dwayne Shearer of Marl Road, Bethel Town, Westmoreland.

Shearer has been charged with burglary, larceny and unlawful wounding in connection with the incident, which occurred along Tangerine Drive in Hermitage Housing Scheme, Westmoreland, on August 17, 2023.

According to reports from the Bethel Town Police, about 2:45 p.m., a man was at home with his family when they heard suspicious noises coming from the garage.

The homeowner went to investigate and reportedly discovered that several crates and bottles had already been removed from the garage and placed outside.

Police said further checks led to the discovery of Shearer, who was allegedly inside the garage armed with a knife and attempting to remove more items.

When the homeowner confronted him, a struggle reportedly ensued during which both men sustained injuries.

Shearer allegedly fled the scene before the police were summoned.

Following an investigation, he was taken into custody during a police operation on Monday, June 29, and later charged.

His court date is being finalised.
