Kingsmen ready for Warriors showdown

Jamaica Kingsmen are riding a wave of confidence as they prepare for their biggest test of the Caribbean Premier League T20 cricket season.

That test comes tonight as they clash against the undefeated Guyana Amazon Warriors at Providence Stadium in Georgetown, Guyana.

With both sides locked on eight points, the 26th encounter this season carries significant playoff implications.

However, the Kingsmen’s path to this point tells a very different story from that of their opponents. While the Amazon Warriors have swept all four of their matches to maintain a perfect record, the Kingsmen have battled through eight games, splitting them evenly with four wins and four losses.

Springboard

However, the Kingsmen’s coach, Grant Bradburn, insists his side’s recent form on the road has provided the perfect springboard for this crucial fixture.

“We’re taking a lot of confidence from our couple of wins on the road; St Kitts, and particularly the game in Trinidad,” he said.

“Both tough environments to win, and to take two points away from both of those venues, both of those teams, was really pleasing for the boys.”

The Kingsmen’s ability to perform away from home has been particularly encouraging for the coaching staff, with Bradburn emphasising the unique challenges each Caribbean venue presents.

“There’s no team on the road in the Caribbean that’s an easy (team to) beat and no venue that is the same. So we’re really enjoying that challenge of making sure that as a strategic group, we’re coming together; captain, coach, and coaches coming together and really hatching the right plans for the right venues and the right opposition.”

Remain grounded

Despite the team’s strong recent performances, Bradburn wants his players to remain grounded, with the playoffs firmly in their sights.

“As a group, we’re well aware of what we need to do to put ourselves into contention for the playoffs, which is the number one goal. But we’re just trying to keep our feet on the ground and just take each and every game as it comes and give our very best in terms of our preparation, our planning, and be really smart around the skills that we tune and the lineup that we put forward to contest each and every opposition.”

Bradburn confirmed a largely healthy squad ahead of the fixture.

“So far everyone is fit and well and available for selection tomorrow, all apart from Andre Russell, who we’re monitoring closely, and we’re certainly hoping that he will be back with us before too long.”

With the squad assembling for their final preparations in Guyana, the coach offered an early assessment of the playing surface.

“The pitch looks to have a reasonable amount of grass on it, but (it’s) a typical Guyana surface. And so we’re planning and preparing accordingly for what should be a tough battle Friday night.”

As the Kingsmen navigate their debut campaign in the CPL, Bradburn expressed pride in the unity and work ethic displayed by his squad.

“The team is in great spirits. From a coaching point of view, we’re super happy that everyone has just got their head down and is working hard, staying connected through the campaign, and each and every day we’re just looking to be a little bit better, and really coming together nicely as a team.”
