Jordan Forrester turns childhood struggle into medical ambition

Years before Jordan Forrester set his sights on a career in medicine, he found himself fighting for his own health.

As a Grade 6 student, he was struck by pneumonia at a critical time in his education, leaving him hospitalised while his classmates continued with their studies.

However, illness did not stop Forrester from pushing forward. From his hospital bed, he completed two of his Primary Exit Profile examinations, turning a difficult chapter in his childhood into an experience that would help shape the path he is now determined to follow.

During his recovery, Forrester saw first-hand the impact doctors could have on their patients and the families hoping for their recovery.

“That experience stayed with me,” the 19-year-old St James native said. “Since then, I have been adamant about one day contributing to my country’s development through healthcare.”

That ambition is now taking shape as Forrester prepares to pursue studies in medicine. He is among the recipients of a $150,000 Desnoes and Geddes (D&G) Foundation Book Grant, which will help cover the cost of books and other educational resources for his studies.

For Forrester, however, the award means more than financial assistance. It represents one less burden for him and his family as they prepare for the demands of university and the years of training ahead.

“Medicine is a very demanding field, so having access to the right materials will be extremely important,” he said.

The significance of the moment was perhaps best captured by Forrester’s immediate reaction when he learnt he had been selected. He went straight to share the news with his mother, Nicole Bliss.

“It was a really special moment for both of us, because we understood what the grant would mean for me as I begin my studies,” he recalled.

Bliss has remained a constant presence throughout her son’s journey, helping to shape not only his approach to education but also the mindset he intends to carry into medical school.

“She has taught me that success doesn’t happen overnight,” Forrester said. “You have to remain committed to your goals, even when things become difficult.”

That lesson is particularly important for a young man whose ambitions extend well beyond earning a medical degree. Forrester hopes his studies will eventually lead him to cardiothoracic surgery, a field through which he believes he can make a lasting contribution.

“I pray that my education takes me to a point where I can one day become one of the best cardiothoracic surgeons in the world,” he said. “I want to dedicate my career to saving lives and making a real difference in healthcare.”

It is an ambitious goal, but Forrester remains firmly focused on Jamaica and the support that is helping him take the first steps towards achieving it.

“I am truly grateful to the D&G Foundation for giving me this opportunity,” he said. “I hope that, as I continue my journey, I can make you proud of the investment you have made in me and, one day, give back to Jamaica in the same spirit of service and support.”
