KPH steps up breast cancer fight

Kingston Public Hospital (KPH) is stepping up its fight against breast cancer with expanded access to breast-conserving procedures and minimally invasive surgery for axillary lymph nodes.

The hospital is also strengthening its multidisciplinary approach to breast cancer treatment, bringing specialists together to improve outcomes and the patient experience.

Through its Breast Cancer Clinic, KPH has assembled breast surgical oncologists, medical and radiation oncologists, physiotherapists and pharmacists to coordinate care based on each patient’s clinical needs.

Cases are also reviewed during regular tumour board discussions, where specialists assess patients together and determine the most appropriate treatment pathway.

Dr Jason Copeland, consultant breast surgical oncologist at KPH, said the team-based approach is critical to delivering modern breast cancer care.

“Breast cancer treatment is no longer about one specialist making a decision in isolation. It requires collaboration among a team of experts to determine the best treatment pathway for each patient. Our tumour board brings these perspectives together to develop a coordinated plan aimed at achieving the best possible clinical outcome,” Copeland said.

One of the clinic’s key achievements has been reducing surgical morbidity while increasing access to breast-conserving procedures and minimally invasive axillary lymph-node surgery for eligible patients.

The techniques can allow the appropriate patients to receive effective cancer treatment, while limiting the extent of surgery.

KPH is also investing in the next generation of specialists by training residents in contemporary breast cancer surgical techniques.

The move is aimed at building a pipeline of healthcare professionals equipped to provide modern cancer care.

But the hospital’s efforts extend beyond the operating theatre. Copeland said educating patients is a crucial part of treatment.

“An informed patient is better positioned to participate in their care. We want our patients to understand their diagnosis, treatment options, and what to expect throughout their journey. Education empowers patients to make informed decisions alongside their healthcare team,” he said.
