Man scammed $1.3m after paying for cupboards that never came
A Portmore man who paid over $1.3 million to have cupboards built for his home was left empty-handed after the contractor allegedly vanished without completing the job, prompting police to step in and lay multiple fraud-related charges.
Charged is 38-year-old carpenter Andron Creary of West Cumberland, Portmore, St Catherine.
Reports from the St Catherine South Policing Division are that the complainant hired Creary to build and install cupboards at his home for a total cost of $1,748,000.
The man reportedly paid $1,348,000 upfront to begin the work, but the project was never completed.
Attempts to contact the contractor reportedly proved unsuccessful, leading the frustrated homeowner to file a report with the police.
Following investigations, Creary was arrested on Monday, April 20, and later charged after participating in a question-and-answer session in the presence of his attorney.
He now faces charges including fraudulent conversion, non-delivery of goods and services on a contracted date, misleading and deceptive conduct, and failure to provide a receipt.
His court date is being finalised.
