Portmore test for struggling Mount Pleasant

If Mount Pleasant Football Academy are to keep their hopes of a Caribbean Cup title defence alive, they will need to deliver a strong performance when they face off against Portmore United today at the National Stadium.
Mt Pleasant will face Portmore in Group B action of the Caribbean Cup with kick off set for 6 p.m.
The St Ann-based club are yet to pick up a win in the competition after a defeat and a draw against the Dominican Republic pair of Cibao FC and Salcedo FC, respectively in their opening two games.
The results have left their title defence hanging on by a thread as they sit at the foot of the table with one point.
Mt Pleasant head coach Theodore ‘Tappa’ Whitmore is well aware of the task at hand but remains confident in his team’s ability to produce when it matters most.
He said his players have been training well ahead of the match and are in the right frame of mind to deliver a strong performance when they take to the field to face Portmore.
“I think we are in a good space. I think we are ready for tomorrow,” Whitmore said.
Whitmore, however, expects another difficult contest as they are going up against the reigning Jamaica Premier League (JPL) champions.
He described Portmore as a difficult team to break down and said they are a well-organised squad with players capable of deciding matches.
“We’re playing against a good team, good opponents. Very organised. These are players who know how to win games,” he said.
SCORING GOALS
For Whitmore, the key to overcoming Portmore will ultimately come down to how effectively his players execute their plans on the field.
One of these key points will be how the team plays in front of goal and finishing the chances they create.
Mt Pleasant have scored two goals in their last two games, but have missed several chances with 27 shots attempted with 11 on target.
Of those 27 shots, 17 were taken from inside the penalty box, pointing to a scarcity in goals for Mt Pleasant.
Portmore are third in the group with three points after a win over Cavalier and a defeat by Salcedo. They have scored three goals with two against and will fancy themselves to get the better of the out-of-form Mt Pleasant.
