‘Bob believed healing a nation begins with caring for each other’ - ‘Busy’ Campbell extols Marley’s values as driving force behind One Love football extravaganza
On Wednesday, February 18, lovers of football, Bob Marley's music and Jamaican culture will gather at the Harbour View Mini Stadium to celebrate the life of Jamaican music legend Bob Marley, through the 44th staging of the annual Bob Marley One Love football extravaganza.
The event was launched on Sunday at Football Factory, with organiser Clive 'Busy' Campbell noting Ash Wednesday continues to be an ideal day to celebrate the legendary musician.
"The Bob Marley One Love football matches is a tradition borne out of music, movement and means. It is only fitting that this event will be held on Ash Wednesday," Campbell said.
"It's a day that calls us to reflection, humility and renewal, a day that asks us to look inward and then outward at how we treat one another.
"Bob sang of freedom, unity and love, not as distant ideals but daily responsibilities. Bob believed we are bound together, that none of us ride alone and that healing a nation begins with caring for each other," Campbell added.
This year the event will be honouring five iconic musicians in Tony Rebel, Sizzla, Chris Martin, Romain Virgo and Mikey Bennett.
Four teams, Entertainers, Referees, Masters and Celebrities and Christian Ambassadors will vie for the coveted Cecelia Marley-designed One Love Trophy.
Mitsy Williams, a representative of the Bob and Rita Marley Foundation, said they expect another great day of fun and football.
"The Bob and Rita Marley Foundation is once again a proud sponsor of this event, now in its 44th staging. The football matches have become a calendar event for all of us, football fans and lovers of Bob Marley's music. And it's good entertainment and great family togetherness," she said.
"Bob loved football, he was passionate about the sport and Clive 'Busy' Campbell and Masters and Celebrities have taken on the mission for four decades to ensure that nobody forgets.
"The event brings about friendly competition for footballers, entertainers and corporate sponsors. It's all about Bob," she stated. "It's a celebration of football, one of his greatest loves, and his music.
"On Ash Wednesday we expect another great day of fun and football. We look forward to ones coming out to celebrate with us."
All proceeds from the event will be used to assist selected basic schools or children's homes.
General manager of the Sport Development Foundation, Alan Beckford, added that the event is a coming together of sports, culture and legacy in a very special way.
"The three of them go hand in hand. This is inspired by the timeless message of Bob Marley," Beckford said. "The One Love matches are not about competition on the field. It is using sports as a platform to inspire us to connect with communities and the values that unite us across generations."
