‘A massive three points’ Whitmore rejoices after Mt Pleasant edge Portmore in Caribbean Cup

Mount Pleasant Football Academy kept their Caribbean Cup dreams alive when they eked out a 1-0 win over reigning Jamaica Premier League champions Portmore United in Group B action at the National Stadium yesterday.
Daniel Green scored the all-important goal for Mt Pleasant in the 40th minute, securing their first win of the campaign.
The result sees Mt Pleasant moving to third in Group B on four points, leapfrogging Portmore, who fell to fifth on three.
They trail group leaders Salcedo, on five points, and pulled level with Cibao on four.
Cibao,, however, hold the advantage with a better goal difference and a game in hand.
Theodore ‘Tappa’ Whitmore, Mt Pleasant’s head coach, said he was pleased with the performance, despite criticising their finishing.
“I think it was a massive three points this afternoon,” said Whitmore.
“I think the players showed character. We knew the objective from day one. I think we were wasteful in front of the goal, but we continue to create chances.
“We had to keep a clean sheet this afternoon,” he added.
With both teams seeking important wins to improve their chances at securing a spot in the next round, it promised to be an end-to-end affair. And so it proved in the 40th minute when Mt Pleasant opened the scoring through Green, who had the goal at his mercy. He was in the right place at the right time to tap home a loose ball which was parried from an initial shot by Nickalia Fuller.
Portmore started the second half hunting the equaliser but struggled to unlock a well-organised Mt Pleasant defence.
Mt Pleasant looked destined to get their second goal when Green dribbled into the box but was denied at the final moment.
Then Portmore got a big chance to equalise in the 75th minute when a delivery in the box found the head of Tedj Bryan, but he could not direct his shot on target.
Portmore were reduced to 10 men in the 80th minute when goalkeeper Daviegh Payton was shown a straight red card after he was adjudged to have handled the ball outside the box and stopped a goalscoring opportunity for Warner Brown.
Brown then had the ball in the back of the net five minutes later, but the goal was called back as the striker was offside.
Portmore’s head coach Rodolph Austin bemoaned the loss, and shouldered the responsibility.
“Our philosophy at Portmore is that we win together, we lose together, we don’t go back and point fingers,” Austin said. “So whether we win, lose, or draw, it’s our responsibility.”
Portmore will turn their attention to the final match of the group when they face Cibao in a must-win fixture, while Mt Pleasant will close out their group campaign against Cavalier.
