Herbert Morrison remain in contention for second round with 1-0 win
TEN-MAN Herbert Morrison Technical clipped Maldon High 1-0 for a well-needed win in their daCosta Cup Zone A match at Herbert Morrison playing field yesterday.
Zamundha Brown scored the winner in the 44th minute. Herbert Morrison's Domonique Clarke was sent off in the 60th minute after his second yellow card for unsportsmanlike behaviour.
Maldon remained second in the zone with 16 points after yesterday's result. Cornwall College lead the zone with 22 following their big 5-1 win over Irwin High. Herbert Morrison are third on 12.
Herbert Morrison's coach Garfield Anderson said the win emphasised the importance of belief and determination.
"Marcus Garvey said if you have no confidence (in self) you are twice defeated in the race of life. We used that to motivate the youngsters," Anderson said, noting the players executed well.
"We came up very determined, focused and knowing that a win will keep us in contention for a place in the inter zone," added Anderson.
Meanwhile, Dillan Thelwell, coach of Maldon, said complacency and poor execution led to the defeat.
"Our guys fell short today. In the second half, it was 11 versus 10 and we were trying to settle down and open the game a little bit. It just never happened today," Thelwell said.
"Hopefully on Saturday against Cornwall we can turn the fortune," he added.
After Maldon's Kenroy Thorpe was called for a handball, Brown curled his free kick past the goalkeeper from just outside the 18-yard box shortly before half time.
In the second half, Maldon applied intense pressure, dominated and created many chances but Herbert Morrison kept them out with stout defending.
In a top-of-the-table clash in Zone I high flying Glenmuir High whipped defending champions Garvey Maceo 4-0.
Ricardo Binns scored in 11th minute, Orel Miller 24th and Dunsting Cohen got a double in the 42nd and second-half stoppage time.
The win pushed Glenmuir to 21 points after their seventh win while Garvey Maceo remain second on 18 points.
In Zone A St James High hammered Green Pond High 5-0, while Zone D's William Knibb Memorial High made light work of Troy High with a 3-0 win.
