Morgan promises relief on island’s bus routes

Works minister Robert Nesta Morgan has promised a two-month push to improve some of the island’s most heavily travelled bus routes, as the government moves to tackle deteriorating road conditions affecting commuters and motorists.
Morgan said the rehabilitation programme is intended to bring immediate, visible improvements to corridors used daily by thousands of people.
“Bus routes carry the daily life of our communities. When these roads deteriorate, the impact is felt by bus and taxi operators, passengers, private motorists, businesses and families alike,” the minister said.
He said the government will “move deliberately to improve a number of these corridors and make travel safer, smoother and more reliable”.  
The programme forms part of the works ministry’s 2026/2027 recurrent maintenance programme for secondary roads, which the National Works Agency classifies as Class B roads of regional importance that connect with arterial roads and typically carry between 500 and 2,000 vehicles daily.
Approximately $365 million has been programmed for bus-route works in the budget. The government said the work is expected to include pavement rehabilitation, surface repairs, and the treatment of failed road sections.
The government says the timing of individual projects may change because of weather, site conditions and other operational factors.

ROADS SLATED FOR REPAIR

Western Jamaica: 
Shrewsbury Drive; Marldon-Maroon Town; Seaford Town; and Falmouth-Springvale, including Bounty Hall-Wakefield.

Southern Jamaica: 
Selected Clarendon routes including Mocho-Eden Top, Goshen-Bowens Gate, Pennants-Morgans Pass and Osbourne Store-Darloh.

Southeastern Jamaica: 
Guava Ridge-Mavis Bank Square, Lawrence Tavern-Glengoffe, Port Morant-Bath, Morant Bay-Wilmington and selected routes in northwestern St Catherine.

Northeastern Jamaica: 
Bamboo-Brown’s Town, Gayle-Guys Hill, Martins-Islington and selected school and community bus corridors across Portland.
