Mother sends ransom for ‘kidnapped’ son who was found relaxing with girlfriend
What was first reported as a kidnapping involving a 25-year-old man has turned out to be a domestic dispute, prompting police to warn the public about the dangers of making false reports.
Investigators from the Specialized Investigation Branch (SIB) said the report was made on March 16, claiming that the man, initially believed to be an Antiguan national, had been abducted.
According to the Jamaica Constabulary Force, the man's brother, who lives in Antigua, reported receiving a ransom demand from persons allegedly holding his sibling. It was also reported that the man's mother sent money to an individual in Jamaica in response.
The report triggered an extensive police investigation, with officers carrying out an operation at a property in Kingston.
However, upon arrival, the alleged victim was found at the location with his girlfriend. Police said he was unharmed and not being held against his will.
He later explained that the situation stemmed from a misunderstanding linked to a domestic dispute. The man also clarified that he is a Jamaican who resides in Antigua and was visiting the island to see his girlfriend.
Superintendent Oral Henry is now urging members of the public to think carefully before making reports, warning that false claims can have serious consequences.
"Investigating a kidnapping requires significant resources, and false reports can lead to unnecessary expenditure, damage the credibility of genuine victims, and is also a criminal offence," Henry said.
Police say investigations into the matter are ongoing.
