Security guard who killed woman after quarrel over garbage, dies

A security guard who was charged with murder for the shooting death of a woman, following a quarrel over garbage disposal in Carlton Mountain, near Claremont, St Ann on March 2, is dead. 

Leroy Martin, otherwise called 'Biggy,' 56, who allegedly shot and killed 19-year-old Navagia Gray  and wounded another, was found unresponsive in his cell at the Brown’s Town lock-up on Thursday afternoon. 

Martin had appeared in court to answer to a charge of murder and two counts of wounding with intent and illegal possession of firearm and ammunition, and was remanded to reappear in court. 

Reports are that Martin had complained of not feeling well and later in the afternoon he was discovered on the floor of the cell, unresponsive.

He was rushed to the St Ann’s Bay Regional Hospital where he died while being treated.  

On March 2, Martin had a dispute with the woman over the dumping of garbage in the community, which escalated into a quarrel.

He allegedly left the scene and returned with a firearm and fired several shots, hitting two persons, one was pronounced dead on arrival at the St Ann’s Bay Regional Hospital. 

Martin fled the scene but was apprehended a few days later and charged for murder.  

Commandant for the St Ann police, Senior Superintendent Dwight Powell, told The STAR on Monday that the death is being probed by INDECOM and other internal agencies.
