KINGSTON:

The Caribbean Premier League (CPL) has its Jamaican franchise back, but it will return to the crease under a powerful new identity.

At an official announcement on Tuesday in Kingston, owner Farad Sarwar unveiled that the franchise formerly known as the Jamaica Tallawahs will now be called the Jamaica Kingsmen, ending months of speculation following the government's approval of a new ownership structure and the confirmation that the country will host matches during the CPL 2026 season, starting in August.

Sarwar, addressing a room of stakeholders and media, explained that the name was not born out of a corporate marketing strategy, but a moment of spiritual clarity.

"I want to tell you why the name came up, and it's something random, but it could be as far as I am," Sarwar said.

"One day, I woke up, and we were talking about our street cricket team at that time. I was like, I want to name it something that's very, very impactful."

The owner, who describes himself as a deeply spiritual person, elaborated on the significance behind the moniker.

"I'm a very spiritual person. That's how I was raised. And as far as I'm concerned, there's only one king, and that's the man upstairs. And we are the Kingsmen. So that's what I'm going to call Jamaica. Jamaica Kingsmen."

WOMEN'S FRANCHISE

While the men's team now has its identity, Sarwar revealed that the women's franchise's name is still in the works, emphasising the need for patience to get it right.

"As far as women are concerned, I want to take my time - and that's what I've told everybody - because that is a very, very dear project as far as I'm concerned," he said.

"I'm super excited to be involved in the women's development here, from the grassroots. I want to make sure we reflect everything that represents all the Jamaican women in this area. We want to make sure we come up with the best name that's suitable. So pardon me. We're going to take our time on it."

The announcement marks a significant moment for cricket in the nation, with Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, Olivia Grange, declaring the island's return to the regional tournament after a period of absence.

"I'm delighted to say Jamaica is back in the Caribbean Premier League and we are in it to win it," Grange said to applause.

INCOMPLETE

The minister emphasised that the league had felt incomplete without the island's presence.

"For all its success, there was one essential element missing from the CPL, and that has been Jamaica," she stated.

Looking ahead to the upcoming season and the country's role as a host, Grange highlighted Jamaica's unique status as a premier destination for sport.

"There's no better place to watch, participate in or talk about sports than in Jamaica," Grange said.

"We have set out strategically to provide the best facilities for the best athletes in the world to develop and compete in Jamaica, and for the fans from every part of the world to come to Jamaica, to experience and enjoy one-of-a-kind energy and vibe that makes us who we are."
