With Chapelton Maroons among five teams in a battle against relegation from the Jamaica Premier League (JPL), coach Vassell Reynolds was left utterly disappointed with the energy and effort from his team during their 2-0 defeat by Cavalier at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex on Monday

A Gawain Austin own goal and a Dwayne Atkinson last-minute strike secured the win for Cavalier, who sealed their playoff spot with 63 points. They moved ahead of Portmore, also 63 points, into fourth on goal difference.

However, for a team in the thick of a relegation fight, Reynolds' Maroons were lacklustre and uninspiring and he said they must improve this side of their game to beat off relegation.

"Very disappointing. We achieved the objective for the first half. We didn't play all that well but it was 0-0 at half time.

"We came out very flat (second half). And once we conceded that own goal it was downhill from there. The players dropped their heads. So, yes, it was very disappointing, not just the result but the effort, especially in the last 25 minutes. We have to get it this type of performance out. If we do that in the next game we are in trouble," he said.

Chapelton have Tivoli Gardens and then Vere Phoenix for their remaining games and Reynolds said they need energy as well as quality to get the results they require to survive.

Nevertheless, he said their destiny is in their own hands and he is still confident that they will turn things around.

"What it tells us is we have to go with some energy and some quality in the next game against a very good Tivoli team.

"Mathematically, we are still in it. Things are still in our hands. We just need to do what we have to do next week," Reynolds said.

Molynes United, 35, Dunbeholden 34, Harbour View, 33, Chapelton, 33, and Humble Lion, 33, are all battling to stay in the league after Vere Phoenix were relegated.

Cavalier controlled Monday's game and had chances in the first half through Jalmaro Calvin, Giovanni Laing and Atkinson. Cavalier broke the deadlock thanks to Austin's own goal, and Atkinson sealed the win with an 89th-minute goal,.
