Young soldier killed in shooting on Waltham Park Road

A mechanical problem turned fatal Tuesday night when a 24 year old soldier was gunned down while trying to fix a broken down vehicle along Waltham Park Road.

Dead is 24 year old Daniel Crawford of Spaldings, Clarendon.

Reports from the police are that about 9:00 p.m., Crawford and an off duty policeman were travelling along the roadway when the vehicle they were in reportedly developed mechanical trouble.

Investigators say the men stopped along the road and began attending to the vehicle when their efforts were violently interrupted by gunfire.

Explosions reportedly rang out in the area and Crawford was shot during the attack.

He was rushed to hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The policeman, who was with Crawford at the time, was not seriously injured and is assisting investigators as they probe the circumstances surrounding the deadly shooting.

Police are continuing investigations as they try to determine a motive and identify the attackers.
