Mount Pleasant Football Academy are looking to make better decisions in the final third to improve their performance in the Jamaica Premier League (JPL).

After two straight defeats in their opening Jamaica Premier League (JPL) football matches, Mount Pleasant have now gone two matches without defeat, after battling to a 1-1 draw with Cavalier in their latest game on Sunday night at Sabina Park.

Adrian Reid gave Cavalier a dream start with a goal in the second minute.

However, Trayvonne Reid’s 17th-minute penalty strike ensured a point for Mount Pleasant.

Final decision

The St Ann team created the better openings over the course of the 90 minutes. However, they were let down by the final pass or final decision most of the time.

Davion Ferguson, Mount Pleasant’s assistant coach, pointed out that they continue to work on this aspect of their attacking play.

“In the final third, we are having some challenges in terms of just completing the final action. So that is something we continuously try to work on,” he said.

“We have played four games, and the first two games we lost and didn’t even score a goal. The last two games we won, and we drew the other, and we have scored three goals and conceded one.

“We are building slowly, but still not where we want to be. However, in the last two games we have made an improvement in the JPL and it’s about continuing that progress,” Ferguson commented.

Acceptable point

Though disappointed they could not win against Cavalier, Ferguson says the point was acceptable, considering their poor start.

“Each time we play a game against this opponent, Cavalier, we know the rivalry, the competitiveness of both organisations and the history between both organisations.

“We definitely wanted to win the game. They scored on us very early, which forced us to play a different game. But we got a goal pretty early, in terms of the equaliser, and we had enough space and time to actually recover the game,” Ferguson reasoned.

“It is always disappointing when you don’t win, but credit must be given to the opponent; they made it difficult,” he added.

“It was a good showing in terms of two competitive teams going up against each other. There were moments where we could have scored, and they had a moment in the latter part of the game. So we are disappointed, but we will move on to the next one.”

Clearer chances

Cavalier assistant coach David Laylor believed they had the clearer chances. Nevertheless, he is pleased with their start in the JPL and the chances they are creating.

“In terms of opportunities, we got the clearest. It was a good showing from the youngsters; we were really up to the task,” he said.

“It was an unfortunate penalty, but at least we have started better this season than last season.

“The guys are really fit. We still have a few injuries, but it’s a good start. We haven’t lost after three games, and this is one of our better starts in the league in a long while,” said Laylor.

Cavalier are fifth in the standings with seven points from three matches, while Mount Pleasant are eighth on four points.
