Ex-cons charged with stealing wires
Two ex-convicts, one of whom received a suspended sentence last November, found themselves in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court last week to answer to larceny charges.
Dane Peart and Shamari Henry are charged with storehouse breaking and larceny as well as receiving stolen property.
It is alleged that on January 12 about 2 a.m., the storeroom of a company was broken into and 32 boxes of cable wires were stolen. The items are said to be valued at $4.1 million.
The police, following investigations, found Peart and Henry burning the cable wires later that same day. They were then arrested. Roxaine Smith, the attorney representing the accused, submitted to Senior Parish Judge Lori-Ann Cole-Montague that she intends to make bail applications for the men who have been in custody since January 25.
"In relation to the allegation that they were found with the cable wires, Mr Peart was nowhere on the scene. Based on my instructions, there is no nexus in relation to Mr Peart. In relation to Mr Henry, he instructs that he was on the property where the wires were allegedly being burnt and denies being in possession of the wires," Smith told the court.
Peart faced the court last November on the charge of simple larceny relating to an electronic device and was given a two-year suspended sentence. Similarly, Henry admitted to a previous conviction of robbery. They were remanded in custody until March 24, when their lawyer is set to make a bail application on their behalf.
A fingerprint order was made for both accused and their criminal records were requested by the judge for the next mentioned date.
