March 7 to 14 was globally celebrated as World Rotaract Week for 2016.

For the week, members of the Rotaract Club of St Andrew - a professional-service, leadership and community-service organisation comprising young adults between the ages 18 and 30 - conducted numerous projects with the aim of giving back to communities in the Corporate Area. Their major activity for the week was on March 12 with their first biannual 'Blood & Can Drive' at the National Chest Hospital in St Andrew.

Melissa Whyte, club president, said they chose to give blood, along with others they encouraged to on the day, because the act is just as important as giving monetary contributions and gifts to the needy in our society.

There is always a great demand for blood in our society. It is very important that members of the society, who are able to give blood, should do so. Road accident victims, people who undergo surgeries and people in need of blood transfusions are always in need of blood. The club also collected canned food, which will be donated to the Balcombe Drive Primary and Junior High School's breakfast programme for children who cannot afford a hot meal in the morning.
