Music duo Jonkunu bridging genres
Jamaica has long produced artistes who have reshaped the sound of global music, from reggae’s pioneers to dancehall’s modern innovators.
Now, a new creative force is emerging with a vision that reaches beyond genre while remaining deeply rooted in Jamaican identity. Jonkunu is a masked music duo whose artistry is driven as much by cultural preservation as it is by musical innovation. Comprised of acclaimed producer Juss Kool and vocalist-songwriter Wah Gwaan, Jonkunu is challenging conventional expectations of reggae and dancehall by placing songwriting, storytelling, and artistic expression ahead of celebrity.
The duo’s name pays homage to Jamaica’s historic Junkanoo tradition, the vibrant masquerade that traces its origins to the island’s African ancestry. Their signature masks are more than a visual statement — they represent a philosophy. Rather than allowing image or personality to overshadow the work, Jonkunu invites listeners to focus on the music itself while reminding audiences that everyone wears masks throughout life’s journey.
“Our music is about what’s underneath the mask,” Juss Kool explains. “That’s where the truth lives.”
Both Juss Kool and Wah Gwaan have impressive résumés. Born in Jamaica and raised in the Bronx, New York, Juss Kool has built a respected career as a producer, songwriter, and engineer. His production credits include work with dancehall artiste Elephant Man as well as releases for the legendary Massive B label. He has also had music featured on the Grand Theft Auto soundtrack. His technical foundation was further refined while training under renowned engineer Phillip Smart at the iconic HC&F Studio in New York, following an internship at Hot 97 alongside Bobby Konders. Raised in Jamaica, Wah Gwaan has quietly become one of the industry’s respected songwriting talents, contributing behind the scenes to dancehall projects.
While reggae and dancehall remain the heartbeat of their sound, Jonkunu embraces contemporary production, soul, hip-hop, and global musical influences to create records that speak to audiences across cultures. Lyrically, their work explores themes of identity, resilience, love, heritage, spirituality, and social consciousness, subjects that resonate well beyond Jamaica’s shores.
For the duo, the mission extends far beyond releasing songs. Jonkunu is developing an expansive creative universe that includes visual storytelling, fashion, and multimedia concepts designed to celebrate Caribbean culture through a fresh, modern lens. Their approach reflects a growing movement among Jamaican creatives who are redefining what it means to build an international brand while remaining authentic to their roots.
