Many artistes who got their start in competitions organised by the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC) later frown on those associations, arguing it boxes them as a 'Festival' or 'regional' act.

But that's not the case with Ejai. The New York-born rapper made his entertainment debut in JCDC contests 20 years ago while living in Hanover, where his parents are from. He credits that platform for him displaying confidence whether recording in the studio or performing on stage.

"I entered the performing arts section (music) and gained a bronze medal the first time, then went again and received a silver medal representing my school, Esher Primary in Hanover. If it wasn't for Mrs [Aldith] Stephens, I wouldn't have been able to embrace and discover my vocal talent," said Ejai.

He shows that vocal prowess on Letter From Me and Magician, his latest songs, which were released in early January. Both are produced by Iconix Beatz. Letter From Me is a heartfelt pledge to his two sons and a commitment that he will be a responsible parent by avoiding the pitfalls of the music business.

"It's very personal. I go into detail on what my current and past situations are and the plans I have for my children and legacy, and what I'm doing in order to secure that for them," Ejai explained.

The singles are follow-ups to Fast, which was released last summer. He considers that song as his most successful to date.
