Teenager 1 Suga Dhon looks to inspire youth
Although still a teenager, 1 Suga Dhon wants to leave a legacy that her contemporaries will appreciate.
That is the objective of songs like 40, which is her latest single. The track is from the Green Concrete rhythm compilation album which has songs by elite acts such as Sizzla, Norris Man and Turbulence.
The track hears 1 Suga Dhon imploring her peers to stay focused despite life's challenges.
"A whole heap of people can relate to the song. Whole heap a [young] people come to me and say, 'Yow, da song yah really touching, da song ya really mek mi sit down and meds'. So the song can really do a lot and have a big impact," she said.
1 Suga Dhon, who is from Portland, is in her final year of high school. A music career was always on the cards, as she recalls creating beats by tapping noisily on school desks.
Professionally, she hopes to become an entrepreneur, but after recording her first song in 2020, 1 Suga Dhon's appetite for making music became even more intense.
"What I like most about recording is I get to express my feelings. Somebody can ask me a million times how mi feel and I don't say anything. But jus' give mi a 'talkaphone' and me will tell yuh how mi really feel," she said.
