Kingston, Jamaica (JIS): The Consumer Affairs Commission (CAC) has been undertaking a survey of sanitisation and hygiene products retailed islandwide since March, when Jamaica recorded its first case of the novel coronavirus.

Chief Executive Officer, Dolsie Allen, said approximately 118 locations, including supermarkets and pharmacies, have been visited.

“We actually surveyed 54 different products including disinfectants, hand sanitisers, antibacterial hand soaps, hydrogen peroxide, rubbing alcohol, gloves and masks,” she said on the JIS Television Programme ‘Get the Facts’.

“What we have been finding is that product availability is not as high as we want, but there is over 50 per cent availability in most areas. There is still the challenge with some of the disinfectant sprays, certain brands… are not available in sufficient quantities… and also we found that there were differences in prices from one store to the next,” Mrs. Allen added.

Against this background, she encourages persons to shop around, pointing out that doing so will enable them to get the products at the most competitive prices.

“The availability is there but the prices are different everywhere that you go; so you should ensure that you get the best price. We have a list of the items and they are on our website and the prices also; we have the different locations where they are as well. So if you go on our website, www.consumeraffairsjamaica.gov.jm, or go on our App, you will find those,” Mrs. Allen said.

She also encourages persons to purchase items on the approved list from the Bureau of Standards Jamaica or the National Compliance and Regulatory Authority (NCRA).

“Please check it and ensure that you don’t buy substandard products but those that have been tested by the Bureau,” Mrs. Allen stated.
