Mom using obeah on my girlfriend

March 31, 2021

Dear Pastor,

I am taking this opportunity to write to you because I am having a problem. In my district, my parents, especially my father, are well known to be spiritually gifted.

To put it plainly, my father has always practised obeah from the time I have known him and he walks around telling people what he can do for them. My mother always has pencils in her head tie and in her hair. A few years ago, I fell in love with a young woman and people told her that my family was bad and she should not have anything to do with me. But she did not listen to them. We rented a two-bedroom apartment and we live together. My mother told her that somebody was after us because they wanted us to break up. She sprinkled grave dirt at the entrance and she threw oil on the steps. I have been trying to get my girlfriend pregnant, but people say it is not going to happen because of my mother's interference. My girlfriend is about to leave me because she is tired of what she has been seeing. Sometimes we can't sleep. We are hearing voices all around the house. Pastor, I don't know what else to do to have peace with my girlfriend.

Dear K.E.,

You say that your people have indulged in obeah for many years. You grew up knowing them as what some people call 'spiritual people'. You got involved with a woman who came from a different culture and who nevertheless loves you and wants to be in a relationship with you. But your mother is not making it easy for her because she has been sprinkling stuff at your doorstep. I want to know, however, how do you know that it is your mother doing these things? Have you seen her? Has anybody seen her for that matter? If you are sure that your mother is guilty of these things, you have to talk to her and ask her to desist. Tell her that if she does not stop, you will have to make a clean break from her by moving out. I hope she gets the message. Concerning the desire to get your girlfriend pregnant, do not listen to what people say. Follow the advice of your doctor.
