Alvas Powell drafted to Beckham-owned Inter Miami
Alvas Powell is the latest Jamaican player to join Major League Soccer's (MLS) as he was drafted by Inter Miami CF yesterday. The franchise owned by David Beckham took him with the second pick of the second round in the MLS Expansion Draft held yesterday, after former club FC Cincinnati left him unprotected and available for selection.
Inter Miami and Nashville SC, the other new expansion side, participated in the draft, which allowed both teams to select one player from each MLS club. According to the club website, FC Cincinnati will receive US$50,000 in General Allocation Money as compensation for the selection.
It was a disappointing season for Powell at Cincinnati where he was acquired via a trade from the Portland Timbers, where he won the MLS CUP championship in 2015. He made only 13 appearances including 10 starts for Cincinnati this season, which finished bottom of the Eastern Conference standings in their debut season.
The team will make their league debut next March.
