Howard University senior Kyraxx has described his latest project, Dat Lovin’, as his best work yet.

Kyraxx, whose given name is Kehmaury Black, released the song, which features Zac Jone$, on January 1. The music video was directed by Jordan Mars who has worked with the likes of Protoje, Sevana and Hector ‘Roots’ Lewis.

Kyraxx, an economics major at the Ivy Leagues university, said that his newest release is “showing more of my capabilities and what’s to come”.

“It is catering to the dancehall-themed R&B audience and I’m pushing that lane because I really feel comfortable in that zone. It’s playing off real emotions and human interactions, which keep us going,” Kyraxx shared.

“The rhythm alone will make a person want to continue listening to it. When people listen to the track, I want them to keep an open mind and really listen to the lyrics, and the second time they listen to it, I want them to put themselves into it. I write what I feel and how I feel in that moment and try to have that relate to people and hope this is why people gravitate to my music,” he continued.

A Munro College old boy, Kyraxx entered the big league in 2018 when he was featured on Leno Banton’s single, Socialize. He released an EP, Watching Over, in 2020 but admits that he was not prepared to bank on a musical career alone, hence his decision to attend university.

“In making the decision to pursue music seriously, I told myself, knowing the challenges of the industry, I have to have a fall back,” he said of his Howard studies.

“My absence was mostly because of school, but also it was a time where I needed to decide personally, if I could pursue music and how I would do it. I had to plan a way around my studies where both it and music could get attention,” Kyraxx told THE STAR.
